Lawyer NEWS - ACMA confirms VoIP service providers' obligation to ensure access to 000
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has confirmed the obligation on VoIP service providers to provide access to the emergency call number, 000.
The Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Amendment Determination 2007 (No 1) amends the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Determination 2002. The amendments clarify that all providers of two-way VoIP services capable of dialling into the public switched telephone network must provide free-of-charge access to the emergency call service. It specifies the obligation on VoIP providers to flag VoIP services in the integrated public number database so that emergency call personnel are aware of address uncertainty when receiving a call through a VoIP service. It also requires that VoIP service providers give location information by Standardised Mobile Service Area coding to emergency services operators.
This amendment determination follows recent calls by ACMA and the Department of Communications, Information and the Arts to ask VoIP providers to commit to resolving emergency service connectivity issues associated with VoIP.
