Law NEWS - Government responds to Pathways to Technological Innovation inquiry
The Australian Government has released a final response to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Science and Innovation's inquiry into pathways to technological innovation. The Government indicated its support for a number of the recommendations including:
- better promoting the innovation support programs that are available to businesses;
- including data on science, engineering and technology graduates in its annual statistical publications;
- pursuing stronger enforcement of intellectual property legislation during negotiations with China; and
- requesting that the Business Industry Higher Education Collaboration Council examines the case for new policy and additional funding to support knowledge transfer ("third stream" activities).
The Government also rejected some of the recommendations including:
- introducing a new funded cluster development program and a funded proof of concept scheme to stimulate innovation;
- implementing additional support mechanisms to assist innovation through pathways other than the formation of start-up companies; and
- extending support to later stage commercialisation activities.
