Legal NEWS - DCITA to conduct investigation into electronic media for the hearing impaired
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, the Hon Helen Coonan, has announced that her department will be co-ordinating an investigation into access to electronic media for the hearing impaired. Senator Coonan acknowledged that a number of initiatives are already proceeding including extensive efforts to caption free-to-air television. However, the Minister identified the growth in subscription television and rapid technology advances in the media as factors instigating the need to reassess current efforts and build on present initiatives. The report is planned to be completed by 30 April 2008. The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts will conduct public consultations in the coming weeks with particular focus on free-to-air, subscription and national broadcasters, internet broadcasters, film producers and cinema operators.
