Legal NEWS - ACMA imposes additional conditions on community radio service's broadcasting licence
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has recently announced the additional conditions that are to be imposed on the broadcasting licence of 2RBR Coraki, a community radio service based in New South Wales. The decision is in response to a number of issues that came to light during the licence renewal process including that:
- the majority of 2RBR's members and sponsors are located outside the licence area;
- the licensee, Community Radio Coraki Association Inc, has established a second studio outside the licence area; and
- 2RBR may be broadcasting outside the licence area.
ACMA determined that these activities detract from 2RBR's responsibilities to the community within the planned licence area. They also potentially breach the technical specifications of the station's apparatus licence. Therefore ACMA has imposed additional licence conditions requiring 2RBR to focus its programming and community participation activities on the local community.
2RBR must report to ACMA regarding its compliance with the additional conditions at the end of the year and at the end of each quarter over the next two years. If the licensee fails to comply with the licence conditions, suspension or cancellation of the licence may occur.
