In this update - Australia and Japan agree on a new tax treaty
On 3 August 2007, the Governments of Australia and Japan announced that they had reached an in principle agreement for the implementation of a new tax treaty. The major benefits include a substantial reduction in withholding taxes imposed on dividends, interest and royalties paid between the two countries. Measures aimed at minimising opportunities for tax avoidance have also been introduced.
